  •  Astilbe Perennial (hardy to about -25F)

Commonly sold astilbe hybrids cover the range from 1/1/2' shorties to back of the border 6 footers.  All possess the same beauty: neat clumps of compound, toothed, almost fernlike leaves above which project showy, featherlike plumes of individually tiny flowers.  Colors include white, all shades of pink, red and purplish magenta.  Bloom season is summer.

Moist soil is the key to success.  Give astilbes a good soil with plenty of organic matter and regular watering.  They will thrive at pool and pond margins if soil isn't saturated.  All grow in full sun, provided moisture is available; but filtered sunlight or part shade is jus as satisfactory and necessary in hot summer regions.  Plant in autumn or spring.  When bloom production declines in 4-5 years, divide old clumps in spring.

Colors: pink, red, peach, creamy white, lavender.
