  •  Begonia Perennial (hardy to about 10F)

A first rate plant for borders, low mass plantings and containers this begonia is attractive in or out of bloom.  Depending on variety or str4ain plants grow from 6 inches to 18 inches high and are compact and bushy.  Glossy leaves are rounded, are up to 2 1/2 inches across, and may be green, bronzy green, or bronze red.  Flowers either single or double may be white pink or red.  Flowers are usually about an inch wide, but there are strains with blooms to 3 inches across.  The main bloom season is summer and early autumn, but where plants are perennial they can bloom all year.

Their requirements are simple: regular garden soil and routine watering.  Set them out in spring in full sun where summers are cool, filtered sunlight or part shade elsewhere.  Most gardeners do not expect a begonia to be perennial because the most common ones are annuals.

Features: colorful, heart-shaped leaves; late summer flowers

Colors: pink

Water: medium
